and in the morning when i wake up

20090406morning temperature: -1 (with wind chill), 8 without
tea today: bancha. I awoke headache-free this morning, and am declaring myself sufficiently detoxed, though I'm going to stay off the hard stuff for a while.
teacup today: a very pretty brown Chinese-style tea bowl my dad sent me from North Carolina.  It's slightly larger than a cannonical Chinese teacup, but smaller (though deeper) than a custard cup.

Still no fever, but the sore throat persists. I believe it to be the source of the cough rather than otherwise. No fever (99 degrees fresh out of a hot shower this morning) and no swollen tonsils. I did have a lymph node that was a bit poky-outy on Monday; suspect it was fighting a rearguard action against the virus. Poor noble lymph node. You will be recollected in the annals. (Mentioned In Dispatches. *g*)

Today, I still have no brain for storytelling, so I am going to work on my book review columns, which means trying to find something to read in this pile of somewhat scary books with naked backs and slave collar imagery that doesn't bounce off the nearest available wall inside of ten pages. Wish me luck.

In other news, a little link salad for a Friday morning:

Monster fireball dominates Geminid sky--a really spectacular APOD today. One of the few things I miss about Nevada is the stargazing. It's pretty much a wash out here. You can find places that are dark enough, but... actually getting a clear night in Winter?

Titan has lakes! eeeeeee!

One of my earliest memories is reading National Geographic with my maternal grandfather. He was a plumber and an immigrant, self-educated, and passionately interested in science and the natural world. I got my habit of reading encyclopedias from him. he never thought it was weird.

When I was just about knee-sitting sized, the Voyagers were passing the gas giants. And NG was full of amazing photos. I know this stuff is everyday, now. But back then... we'd never seen anything like it.

It still gives me a little tight feeling in my chest to see something like a lake on another goddamned planet.

We are tidal beings. In this case, that tide is galactic....

...I'm kind of in love.

And this? This is hysterical. And so NSFW:

Offline for the next week or so

I'll be flying to Florida in a few hours, and although I'll probably have the occasional post or three, I won't be on Livejournal with any regularity. Have a happy holiday season, folks!

R.I.P., Dan O'Bannon

Dan O'Bannon has died. :-(

Between Alien, Return of the Living Dead, and Dark Star, he's associated with three of my all-time favorite films (even if two are just guilty pleasures). Truly a loss.

Hard decisions

Dear a_a,

I need to make a slightly tricky choice. I'm a departmental administrator currently working in a medical faculty, but my own background is in humanities (specifically history and literature). I've been in this post for about 9 months. I really like my job and I work with a good team of people. I'm currently leading the team planning a pretty major conference for the middle of 2010.
BUT my dream job, the thing I've said is the next step I want to make in my career, has just appeared on the College website. It would be a more senior position with a bit more responsibility and most importantly it would move me into the history department.
Do I go for it? I'm worried that I haven't been in this post very long and I don't want to leave people in the lurch with the conference, but at the same time this opportunity might not come up again. If I don't get it I will be perfectly happy staying where I am.

Thanks in advance.

5 for 10 – though really it’s 7 or 8…

This entry originated at adampknave.com.

So Top 10 lists. Thanks for your help yesterday. I have a list of what lists I’ll do now, which is fun to say. Here they are, in no particular order:

Top 10 movies of the year and decade (two lists!)

Top 10 comics of the decade

Top 10 dumb/annoying things my cat has done this year

Top 10 TV shows of the decade

Top 10 internet sites I visited this year

Bonus list: Top 10 Top 10 lists of the year.

Bonus bonus list: One over at Mamapop I won’t reveal yet. (will run Tues Dec 29th)

I don’t know what day any of these (outside of the last) will run, so I guess we’ll find out on Monday. These lists are still subject to change. I don’t think they will though. I am limiting myself to lists that focus on the year or decade though which is why you don’t see “Top 10 toes in order” or something like it. I know, it’s a shame but my specific feelings toward my toes will have to remain a mystery, shrouded in darkness.

Also you won’t see my “Top 10 days that end in -y,” though I am sure you are wondering what at least three of them are. Well, keep wondering.

Anyway… so those will all show up next week (except the one that says it won’t).

The post I didn't make yesterday

1) The Customer Question of the Day: "Operator, I know it's Thursday, but what day of the week is it?" (Any further editorializing on my part would be superfluous.)

2) I'm actually moving forward on The Noise of Endless Wars. Mind you, "forward" in this case means "two steps back, and then forward," because I deleted everything I'd already done on Chapter 12 (relax, it was all of a page) and started anew. It's only a couple of paragraphs, but they're paragraphs I can build on, which the deleted paragraphs were assuredly not.

3) I'm totally ready for Christmas! I'm totally done with my shopping! I'm totally lying out of several orifices at once!

4) Hood Vanilla Egg Nog has finally—finally—been procured and consumed. December may now resume. Thank you.

Daily Science
In 1996, when scientists examined a meteorite from Mars previously uncovered in Antarctica, they were intrigued by what looked like microscopic fossils of ancient Martian life forms. Now, using new technology that wasn't available 13 years ago, NASA scientists have found further evidence that the materials and structures in the meteorite are likely signs of ancient life, rather than the results of inorganic processes.

5:20 am. Tired.

Last day of work before holiday break.

Things are chaotic as usual.
Randy is going back to work as a contractor -ehh uhm.. yea. With the economy, we are desperate and we dont have choice.
Im finding it emotionally painful to watch my "spectrum" kid and my "neurotypical" kid play and interact. Ophelia yesterday climbed up yesterday into her Tripp Trapp, turned around, and sat down. Violet, would have NEVER done that. We went to Chuckee Cheese last night (dont ask) and Ophie would SCREAM when you took her OFF rides - Violet until recently would scream when you put her ON rides.

I dunno - no time to write. Ill try and take some time later.
