I think Uncle Stevie's got the right idea:
Hawking Says Colonize Space or Human Race Will DieBasic notion is, we're getting pretty close to the day where everyone on the planet who wants it can have access to a source of bio-weapons that can wipe out mass numbers both intended and unintended. Screw nuclear, this is the threat that keeps on threatening. If somehow we managed to colonize and become established on other planets, we might be able to at least use the vacuum of space to isolate biospheres.
It's a pipe dream that doesn't address the fact that we're not nearly ready to, oh I dunno, farm on any other planet besides Earth so every colony would be dependent on Earth still, but...

The kitties were sleeping together today. And now they're not. I hope they didn't pound each other around too much. :) They alternate between tender brother/sister moments to whole-apartment brother/sister rampages.
