1:12p - Back to the world I know
Okay, took the last two days off from things. Doing better, as much as can be expected, and very thankful for all the responses of support from everyone. Dad's still in the hospital, but will probably get better physically. Mentally, I'm not sure. He needs some help, but I don't know who's going to give it to him or convince him to seek it. Maybe this bit of trouble will help snap him out of it, but it's been years in the making, so I'm not sure.
Still pretty deeply disturbed by the whole thing, but must keep moving... what else can be done? Maybe I'll make a few happy journal today yet...

1:45p - Let's burst all the bubbles that brainwash the masses
One happy thing: I bought the new Garbage album yesterday.
I love Garbage a whole bunch. Shirley Manson makes me go purrrrrr. I thought the first album was great, and I thought the second album was brilliant. Now about this third album...
Well, at first, I was disappointed. I did a quick flip through the tracks, and my first impression was that they had just made a sell-out pop album to make a shit-load of money. On the surface, most of the songs sound just like your basic cookie cutter pop tunes. This one could be Britney Spears, and this other one could be from J. Random Teen Band, and this one over here could be random derivative R & B pop hit.
But I kept listening, and I read the lyrics, and it started to grow on me. I couldn't believe that Garbage would just put out a junk album, and I'm not disappointed now. First thing I noticed as I kept listening is that, where the songs are poppy, they're well crafted pop. Finely polished and perfectly hooked. But where the songs are most catchy is where the lyrics get most tricky.
Like Cherry Lips. This song starts off with a pop bassline that reminds me of Stevie Wonder, and the vocals sound like super-sweet pop girl, without a trace of the usual Manson huskiness. And the song has words like "rainbows" and "sweetest thing you'd ever seen" and "with your cherry lips and golden curls." But then, if you listen... you realize the song is about a boy. Such a "delicate boy". Wearing hot-pants, making grown men gasp, looking just like a girl, making the whole world want to dance... One of the last lines in the song, "You bought yourself a second chance..." Not quite the usual poppy boppy girl song.
And Parade. This reminds me so much of early- to mid-90's stuff like Lush and Curve. And Can't Cry These Tears makes me think that if Twin Peaks had another movie, this song would be on the sound track. They even do a beautiful straightforward ballad in Drive You Home. It's a good variety of stuff done by the experts.
So the album's not as obviously angsty and moody as the previous two, and some of the songs are downright happy. They had fun with this album and tried some new things, like using instruments other than drum machines and guitars. You might not like it if you want to hear another remix of Only Happy When It Rains, but Garbage is still there. Everything still has a bit of a neurotic twist and barb.
Me likes.
